Engaged Learning

How I'll spend my time at IU Indianapolis.

My first engaged learning experience will be completing honors contracts. I’m excited to complete honors contracts as I enjoy pushing myself to learn more and complete more than what courses alone offer me. With two honors contracts this semester for my computer structures and dynamic data applications classes, I’ve given myself extra projects to further enhance my knowledge and understanding of course material as well as gave myself the opportunity for interesting engineering challenges by creating a real-time multiplayer game in React Native. This connects to my personal goal of creating a real-time multiplayer game, something I had already been working on before this class but for a different platform. This will help me to be a better problem solver as I expect I’ll run into challenges as real-time multiplayer is relatively unfamiliar territory for me.

My second engaged learning experience will be completing an internship. For this I will use my current web development internship at Division of Undergraduate Education. This contributes to my value of engaged learning by doing things at this internship that are related to what I’ve learned throughout my education. This will also look good on my resume, and I expect it will help me to find a good job in the field when I graduate. As an Honors student, it’ll help me become who I want to be by giving myself more challenges. This experience also helps me develop as a communicator as I’ve had to work with other people in the department.

My third engaged learning experience will be volunteering at events. I plan to do this with my girlfriend as I’ve volunteered with her at events before and while I find it intimidating and difficult due to autism, I’ve found that I can handle it if I’m doing it with my girlfriend in a quieter spot and can avoid needing to talk much. This will contribute to my identity as an Honors scholar by realizing the values of social responsibility and equity and inclusion. This connects to my personal goal of using time that I’m a student to help volunteer while I have ample free time. By volunteering I’ll make myself a more caring person. I am planning to include this in my academic plan all throughout my education, as I’ve already been doing it and plan to continue doing it. This helps me develop the profile of community contributor.
